Queen Tiy

Queen Tiy was the Great Royal Wife of the New Kingdom Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who reigned over Egypt around 1300BC. Amenhotep III doted over his wife and reportedly showered her with gifts, building a temple in Nubia dedicated to her worship.

Queen Tiy was the mother of Pharaoh Akhenaten, the unique king who ruled Egypt after Amenhotep III. This suggests that she was also the grandmother of Tutankhamen.

Queen Tiy was intelligent and diligent, and one of the first queens of Egypt to have her name on official acts. She was remarkable for her influence in state affairs in the reigns of her husband and of Akhenaten. The occurrence of her name with that of Amenhotep III shows an official recognition of her ability and standing.
